THE CALL

Imagine the chilly downtown streets of Douglasville, Georgia in the beginning of winter. Can you hear the roar of miniature engines or the cheers of excited onlookers? We can! When Google came to us with the ask of taking on their annual Gravity Games initiative, we were off to the races figuring out what we could do. After all, Gravity Games is the one time of year where STEM students can become engineers, racers, and dreamers as we convert a street in their hometown into a soapbox derby wonderland. 

OUR RESPONSE

Not everyone could compete, but that didn’t mean we wanted them to feel left out of the experience. We started by creating a festival-like environment complete with food vendors and entertainment. We dubbed a section ‘Science Street’ where people of all ages could get hands-on with a variety of STEM concepts like coding, robotics, and learn from Georgia Tech engineers! Our racers were positioned at our inflatable starting line, went down a ramp, and zoomed towards the goal which was all broadcast on jumbotrons. Professional announcers called the race, too, with Lego trophies being handed out to all age group winners. When all was said and done, we proved STEM is full of thrills far beyond the finish line.
